“Only a sinner saved by Grace. This is my story, to God be the glory, I’m only a sinner saved by Grace.”
My physical life started way back in June 1945 in a little village near Newport, Co Mayo. There were three children and I grew up rather shy and dependent on my older brother. As I got older I often thought about eternity and what I had been taught of heaven, hell and living forever. By now I realised I was a sinner and I often wondered how I would get to Heaven, as I did not want to be lost. I was taught that if I didn’t commit any “big” sins, I wouldn’t go to hell but because of my smaller sins I would go to a place called “Purgatory”, to be made ready for heaven: I accepted these teachings (though I now know they are not true to the Bible) and so I developed a great fear of death from a young age. Guilt and fear bound me (though I tried to live as good as I could) and my life was continually mixed-up and depressed.
One night I was invited to a prayer meeting in Westport, where I was introduced to the Bible and to the Giver of Life, the Lord Jesus Christ. I was told how God sent Jesus to pay for all my sins – that Jesus was alive and real and wanted to come into my life and save me. That night in 1978 – I gave my life to Him, “passed from darkness into light” and so started a completely new life for me. God gave me a great hunger for His Word – a great peace filled my soul – guilt vanished in the knowledge of total forgiveness: depression and fear gave way to an assurance that I was going to be in heaven with Jesus, because of His promise “Whoever believes on Him will never perish but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
Over the years I have experienced God’s wonderful power in my life and my family. In the early 80’s our little son suffered a very bad asthmatic attack and after my wife Carmel and I cried out to the Lord he was instantly delivered from it. In 1986 I was suffering from fibrositis and after I was prayed for in a meeting in Minehead, Wales I was healed and have never suffered from it since. In 2003 Carmel’s nephew took meningitis and was given no hope by the medical profession, but after much prayer by many Christians our Father in heaven had mercy on him and gave him back his health. Now I hope that as you read this testimony, you too will be helped and that faith will rise in your heart: yes, I know I’m a very special person (in God’s sight) but then so are you. All you have to do to know His forgiveness and love is to turn totally to Christ.
