Reading through Psalm 139 again I marvel at the words of the Psalmist and think of how great and awesome our God is, in verse 13 he say “God created my inmost being and knitted me together in my mothers womb.” I may have read or learned those words many times, but they didn’t mean anything to me.
I had been brought up in a good strict home. There were seven of us in the family, our parents took us to Church every Sunday and we did all the things that were required of us with regards to our religious duties.
Fourteen years ago I was feeling very dissatisfied as I stood at my kitchen sink. I wondered what would happen if I were to die; would I be able to get into heaven or not? Was I good enough? These were the questions I was asking myself. I was married, had three children and a nice home. To everybody I would seem to be doing OK, I would probably be described as a good person. But inside there was a vacuum that needed to be filled.
So, I got myself a Bible and started to read, but on my own I didn’t understand it, so I put it aside. Still something inside me kept nagging, I just wanted to know more about God.
I got quite ill during that time and through this I met someone who told me God loved me and how precious I was to him. Another year went by and I met someone else who again talked about God as his friend, someone you know not just know about. I started going to Bible studies and I soon realised that Jesus was more than someone you learn about in school, but that He is alive today.
God by His Holy Spirit brought His words in the Bible alive to me and I started to understand it. Three months later, I asked Jesus to come into my life, I repented of the way I had been going and made Him Lord of my life. And everything about my life began falling wonderfully into place.
I realised I was not good enough to get into heaven and I never would be. But Jesus was the way, the only way by which I could get there. The meaning of Jesus’ death and resurrection became very clear to me then. I saw that he had died to pay the full penalty for all my sin. My whole life changed, I have an inner and lasting peace, I am now a new creation in Christ Jesus, 2 Cor 2:17 became a reality for me, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old one has gone, the new one has come.”
God didn’t heal my illness right away, He had to heal me spiritually first. About two and a half years later, God healed my health problem. Since then I have had lots of other problems in my life like anyone else, but God by His unending Grace has brought me through them for His glory.
God loves you too. “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son that whoever believes in Him, shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
