My name is Bernadette McEvoy, I’m originally from Ballyfermot now living in Tallaght. I was brought up in a Catholic family. I got a job when I turned fifteen and like most people then started to go to the local pub. I would go out with my family and sometimes with my friends. I would drink more when with friends. By the age of seventeen my routine was much the same. I would be out possibly five nights out of seven.

Lent came and I realized I was drinking a lot so I decided to give it up for lent.
During this time I would still go to the pub, but one night my sister Imelda came in with her husband and sat next to me. She started to talk about Jesus and how he died on the cross to save me. As she related the story I kept thinking what’s different about this I’ve heard it all my life. I suddenly felt for the first time that Jesus loved me as an individual, I wasn’t just part of the world. I was overwhelmed and started to cry, I was so touched by the whole thing.

For a couple of weeks I would go to my sister’s house and she would explain more of the Scriptures to me, which was great.
One night as I was in bed I was thinking of all that I had heard and I suddenly realized that if I died that night I would go to hell. I knew the Bible said “unless a man is born again he will not see the Kingdom of God”. It was one thing knowing the truth it’s another to obey. That night I asked the Lord to forgive me and to come into my life and He did, praise God.

The next morning I felt so happy. It was like a burden had been lifted from me.
Easter Sunday came and I was looking forward to going to the pub for a drink. I was with family and ordered my first drink which tasted awful so I gave it back and ordered another one which tasted no better. One of my brother in laws said” try something else” which I did but it was just the same. That evening I drank orange, and I have never had an urge to drink since. I believe God took drink out of my life, I could have become an alcoholic I don’t know, but God does. I’m twenty six years a Christian now and God is so wonderful.

I’m married with four lovely children. Even though times can be difficult with problems of different kinds God is always there. The Bible says He has promised never to leave us or forsake us.

My husband Ray and I pray and read the Bible together regularly which I believe is most important. It's a great comfort to be able to come to the Lord when there is trouble. God has been so faithful to us over the years in many situations, small and great.
Our God is an awesome God.
